Makeup for Newbies Part 1: Creating Your base

Now look, I'm not pretending to be an expert on makeup. I am most definitely not. I am simply a lover of makeup. I've only actually been interested in it for about a year, which seems crazy since I've learned so much in only a year.  Anyway, I want to help out those who were like me a year ago, wanting to start their makeup collection and skills but have no clue where to start. If your in that boat or are simply interested in the topic then please continue reading.

I thought that I would go in sections, so this will be the first in a series of posts on this topic. please stay tuned for the rest of the series. The first thing to be thinking about when starting out in makeup is your skin, so let's get started!

Creating your base
When it comes to makeup, having a flawless (or as close to flawless as possible) base is super important. It can help make you look more naturally put together. It also makes the other elements of your makeup easier to do and look better all around.

Primer
If you don't know what a primer for makeup is, it's just like a primer for painting walls or furniture. It will help your face makeup to stay on all day long, it's pretty simple. There are different types of primers however, that each give a different finish to your skin's complextion.

- Some primers are designed to make your skin matte, these are better for oily skin types.
- Others are made to make your skin look glowing and dewy, these are more suitable to dryer skin types.
- Then there are other types, made for things like poor minimizing or staying for over 12 hours, etc.

This step is not necessary for everyone. I personally like using a face primer (after my moisturizer) because I have combination/oily skin. If you have dry or normal/dry skin then you probably won't need a primer before you put your makeup on unless you want a specific look to your skin that you can't get from your foundation.

Concealer
When your just starting out in makeup, concealer is one of the very first things you should get. And I suggest doing some research on this before buying.
Different concealers work better for different skin types. If you aren't sure about your skin type please check out my blog post called "Skin Care for Dummies", all posts are linked to the left :).
If you have very uncommon skin colour, like me, you'll probably have to save up for a more high end concealer (and foundation but we'll talk about that later) since drugstores will rarely carry concealer in uncommon skin colours. It's SO important to have your skin products match your skin colour. I can't stress that enough.
When it comes to concealer it's easy to start to look really cakey if you need a lot of coverage. Concealer is much heavier than foundation. However, you can get concealers with various thicknesses.
- Some are very light and have reflective pigments in them to make you look bright and glowing, these will normally say concealer/highlighter  or brightening concealer, on the packaging. Specifically, those concealers are great for under the eyes, on the top of the nose and in between the eye brows, (also great for people with redder cheeks or irritated eye lids and underneath the brows) because those areas are normally the parts of the face that you want brightened.
- There are also more heavier concealers, better for covering blemish spots, dark spots, veins, extreme redness and really dark under eye circles.

Foundation
Foundation, is perhaps the most difficult step in makeup to get just right. For some people they find their holy grail foundation with no problem at all and just stick with it to the bitter end. My experience has been much more difficult, maybe yours will be too, so here are some tips on making your foundation search as smooth as possible. Just like always, it's sooooo important to know your skin type, AND the finish you want for your skin, when looking for the right foundation. It's similar to primers.

- If you have an oily skin type you might want a more matte foundation, these will dry to a finish that will look like your only wearing powder, that will keep you getting oily or shiny throughout the day. These foundations are effective in keeping you matte for most of the time however they have a reputation for getting cakey very quickly, so we have to be careful with these and apply only small amounts at a time. A very popular matte foundation is M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid Foundation.

- There are glowing foundations, sheer, medium and full coverage foundations. BB creams that cover, moisturize and protect against UV rays.

Research will be very beneficial when looking for a good foundation and also, if you can try and go into a makeup store and have them put the foundation on you, then you can test out the finish, ask questions and see if the foundation effects your skin. If you feel uncomfortable with going in and asking for help (which I often do) then simply do you research, find the foundation you want to try and then when you go into the store test some out on your neck. Some people make the mistake of testing the colour of foundations and concealers on their arm or the back of their hand, but those parts of your body or normally a lot darker than your face.

Powder
Powder is for keeping your makeup in place and controlling oil. It is normally designed for people with oily skin. It's popular to only apply powder to your T-zone (chin, nose and forehead) in order to control oil without making your whole face matte. Some powders have colour and provide coverage of some sort and some are transparent and simply control oil and set your makeup into place. Also, some powder are in a pressed form and some are loose, both can be great but loose can get very messy.
