The Must Have Pieces to Update Your Wardrobe for Spring

No matter how much I would love to be a capsule wardrobe kind of girl, with only a select few items hanging in an understated wardrobe, we both know that’s not the case. It is my goal to one day have such a wardrobe; you know, a cohesive lineup of timeless Céline and Saint Laurent with a pop of Erdem and Gucci thrown in the mix. As I work my way there I’m doing my best to streamline my closet as much as possible. So, here are the pieces I’ve deemed as my style staples for this spring.

Enjoy.

Top half:

A striped tee or long sleeve: No, this isn't thanks to my obsession with French stereotypes. Ever since making the somewhat grand purchase of this easy Comme des Garçon stripped top, the little red heart has made me fall in love with the timeless and fabulously casual style. Pair it with pretty much anything (especially red) and bask in the glory of literally never having to wear a bra.

A statement blouse: Like the embroidered blouses I spoke of last spring or a classic white button up with a twist, the perfect statement blouse (preferably with a ton of layering) is the piece you need to make your spring style feel feminine with a touch of couture.

Over the top:
A patterned or coloured blazer: The hunt for the perfect grey plaid blazer was not one for the faint of heart. You'll be happy to hear I'm thrilled with the one I found, as I am with the other new blazer in my collection, a chocolate brown number you should expect to see in a post very soon. The theme here is that your chosen blazer(s) for spring should say "hey, here I am, I'm wearing a non-boring blazer and it's working".

The perfect denim jacket: Yes, I added yet another denim jacket to my collection, but it's justified. I told myself, for this spring I'll need a denim jacket in the perfect light wash shade, that's not too cropped and has an element that makes it suitable for the rest of my verging on hipster wardrobe. This one fit the bill!

Full body:
Shirt dresses: I was debating between recommending shirt dresses or something a bit more frilly and girly. What was the deciding factor? Shirt dresses look better with sneakers, of course! Although, imagine how glorious a flowing midi length patterned Rixo dress would look with some Stan Smiths... Delicious.

*insert shrugging, unsure girl emoji*

Bottom half:
Wide leg jeans: I'll never forget the glorious day I first tried on these street style worthy Anine Bing jeans. Though that was over a year ago, their straight leg silhouette and raw edges make them a perfect fit for this spring among the platform boots and sneakers and all those fanny packs.

Statement skirts: When shopping for what I call a "statement skirt", know that this can mean whatever your heart desires. Personally, my heart desires cherry red vinyl and something midi length with an avant garde shape (like this one).

Patterned trousers: This is the same story as the blazers. When the sun is sort of shining and you can wear pinstripe trousers and a pink bodysuit, or better yet, plaid trousers and a sun hat, why wouldn't you want to take that opportunity?

Foot Wear:
Mules: What do I like about mules? The fact that they're easy, comfortable, and just the right amount of man repelling. That's my recipe for fashion success this spring.

Snakeskin slippers: Snakeskin, snakeskin, snakeskin. It's a pattern that clashes with pretty much everything and a style of shoe that in any boring colour would be barely noticeable. If you ask me, that's a perfect combination in order to make something noticeable but wearable.

Statement sandals: You already know I love snakeskin; mix it with a thick strapped yellow sandal and you've got a winner. When hunting for your perfect spring statement sandals, remember this; if they don't make you squirm with eagerness to shove them on your feet, move right along.

Your perfect sneakers: The pair of sneakers I was supposed to have crowned with the title of "perfect spring sneaker, 2018" were sadly left in a friend's car for the making of this post. So, you'll have to settle for the thoroughly beaten, or rather, well loved, white Ted Bakers. My new Adidas babies will simply have to be featured some other time.

Accessories:
Wide brimmed hat: You're going to need something stylish to protect your fake tanned skin, my hats of choice are wide brimmed and stay in the white/cream/beige/straw colour family.

The perfect backpack: What does the perfect backpack look like? It goes with everything, it can fit a large S'well bottle without bulging and it's made with life-proof leather.

Classic sunglasses: I've never been one to collect sunglasses. They've always been a piece I thought I should buy once and wear forever. Good news! I found that forever pair, and I challenge you to do the same this spring.

Thanks for reading.
