Skin Care for Dummies

Before I start, please don't think I'm trying to insult you or prove myself to be better then you in anyway by the title of this post, I simply thought it was pretty catchy. Thanks, and please continue reading.

Yes, I am not a skin care expert and perhaps you would prefer taking skin care advice from a professional, however I personally like seeing the views of people more like me. Teens who are having real experiences and who are living by these tips and tricks. Whether you are just recently taking an interest in skin care and want to know how to get started properly or whether you want to re-visit and modify your skin care routine, the tips below will hopefully help!

The Golden Rule
When it comes to skin care the most important thing in my opinion is to BE GENTLE. Your skin is very delicate. In order to make the best of the skin you have, you must treat it with the utmost care. Remember to do things like pat your face dry with a clean towel or cloth after you wash, rubbing and tugging at your skin will irritate it and cause redness. Hopefully you have all heard that common piece of advice before. Also, the skin around your eyes is extremely sensitive and has to be handled very gently. If you wear concealer under you eyes you'll want to be patient when your blending it in. Whether you use your fingers or a brush try not to pull down or outwards on your under eyes since this will make your bags more noticeable and cause your skin to sag and wrinkle more when you get older.
As well as being gentle when you dry your face you also have to be gentle when your washing and applying product to your face. Especially when you exfoliate your face try to make your hands (or whatever you use to exfoliate) have a very light touch. Exfoliators are there to help de-clog your pores, not rip apart your skin cells. Although it might not seem like it but it's important to be gentle with moisturizers, serums, oils, cleansers, etc. too!

Know Your Skin Type
It's super important to know your skin type before you invest in skin care products. Different products are designed differently for specific skin types if your not sure what kind of skin you have then don't be afraid to go into a drug store, makeup counter or even pharmacy, to ask someone for help! Here are some descriptions of the different types of skin, hopefully you will find your skin type here!
DRY: Dehydrated, peeling, irritated
OILY: Greasy feeling around most or all of the face, gets easily shiny
NORMAL: Neutral most of the time, doesn't display any specific qualities
NOMAL/DRY: Fairly neutral but can be dry sometimes
NORMAL/OILY: Fairly neutral but can get oily in some areas of the face
COMBINATION: A combination of oily, neutral and dry patches on the face

The Bare Essentials
When just starting out in skin care the most important first thing to get is a face wash/cleanser. A good quality cleanser is essential in managing good skin. If you want to invest in a more expensive skin product, make sure you research review on it first, it may make or break your decision (and your wallet). The next most important thing is moisturizer. Depending on your skin type, you may want to go for a very light moisturizer (oily-normal/oily), something that will keep your skin from getting dehydrated but isn't to heavy. For those who have more dry-normal/dry skin type, you'll want to opt for a heavier, more intensive cream. If your like me and have combination skin, your probably wondering what moisturizer would work best for you, well this is not an easy question to answer. I tend to lean more towards the creams that are designed for oily skins, something light but still hydrating. It may be different for you, but that's sort of up to you to find out, through research and trial and error (sorry I couldn't be of much help there although I doubt any moisturizer will effect your skin negatively). After you have found your grounding products you can start to build you skin care routine or choose to keep it more simple. Personally, I use an acne cream, eye cream and serum before moisturizing.

Water Water Water
The last thing is something I really struggle with. It's drinking the recommended amount of water a day, which I believe is 8 cups. But this is super duper important! Not only with keeping you healthy and energetic but it really does help with your skin. Water can help reduce acne, keep skin from getting really dry, decrease dark circles under the eyes and bring youthfulness and life to your face.

Well, those are, in my opinion, the most important things to remember when dealing with skin care. I hope you were able to take something out of that! Please leave in the comments below some of your favourite skin care products or some skin care tips you want to share! I would LOVE to hear from you! Thank you so much for reading and have a great day!
