It's almost time to fold up the wool coats and bring out the highly anticipated spring wardrobe, which has been squished in the back of our closets since last year. If you're like me, you'll take a look at these wrinkled pieces and say, "what was I thinking?" Sure you'll get some wear out of those BCBG nude sandals, and maybe you'll find the perfect occasion to wear last summer's token wedding guest dress, but as for the rest of it, the voice in your head is telling you to start a giveaway pile. And you know what that means? SHOPPING!
As I've just returned from my annual spring/summer spending spree, I thought it was the perfect time to share with all of you what I see as the must have piece for this spring. This is the item you'll make the splurge for. It's something to wear over absolutely everything.
Enjoy.
No matter if the sun is shining or the rain is coming down, if it's a day in the office or a windy trip to the beach, a simple coat is an all rounder. You're probably used to seeing me in duster style coats, which are still a necessity in my wardrobe, but this season I've made the mature choice of spending my hard earned dollars on a piece that I can wear anywhere. This was a hard decision for me, since I normally gravitate towards the statement items that require specific circumstances to wear. I'm proud of myself for this "grown up" decision, but when I look at this coat I think, "how could I possibly have not gotten it?" With its flowing crepe material, versatile colour, gorgeous split back panel, and large, flapping lapels, I'm constantly in awe of this coat. Though it is a basic piece, it's details make it the star of the show whether you wear it over a dress or jeans and a tee. It is the ideal piece to keep you warm in the transition months but more importantly, keep you looking fresh and classy.
When on the hunt for your staple spring coat, here's what to look for.
- Layering
- Neutral colour
- Airy fabric
- Mid thigh or knee length
- Belt at the waist
If you follow this criteria, you'll find the most wonderful, flattering coat to carry you through the season.
Thanks for reading.
