My wardrobe has been built on a fairly solid foundation of TopShop and ASOS, as anyone would expect from a fashion loving student on a budget. That's what fast fashion retailers are here for right? They allow those of us with shallower pockets the freedom to dress however we want, while still knowing where our clothes are coming from. Peppered into my clothing arsenal however, are a select few pieces in which I've made the choice to spend a little bit more. There is a way to have the best of both worlds. As a young, saving student I'm very particular about where my money goes, and when the time and item are right, I have no problem making the splurge for something special. But how do I make that decision? It's never something haphazard or impromptu. I've broken the process down so there are three consistent things to consider. As I've recently added a very special piece to my wardrobe, I thought it was the perfect time to share this equation with you. For any future shopping endeavors, you will be prepared to spend wisely.
Enjoy.
When I saw this knit in a local boutique (LBV Lifestyle) it was truly love at first sight. Or perhaps love at first touch. Whilst casually riffling through the racks my hand grazed something so soft and light I was forced to stop. As soon as I pulled it off the rack I knew instantly it was from the French brand Zadig & Voltaire. I had admired their knits for quite some time and always credited their ability to be recognized, not because of a label or the subtle ZV stitched at the bottom of every piece, but because of their avant garde graphics and overall powerful vibe. Founder Thierry Gillier and his wife - artistic director for the brand Cécilia Bönström - have a way of creating pieces that appeal to the working woman and make her feel in control. There is strength in their prints and use of bold colour, and that is perfectly demonstrated in the knit you see here. But to spend nearly $400 on a sweater, it had to tick all three of the following boxes.
1. Versatility
When deciding whether or not to make a purchase, I conduct the three outfit test. Can I instantly think of three different outfits in which this piece could be utilized along side items that I already own? These outfits should be more complicated than simply jeans and sneakers as well. If introducing something into your wardrobe will bring use to statement or neglected pieces of yours, it's definitely worth considering.
2. Individuality
Will it be memorable? Is it like anything you've seen from other retailers? When you wear it, will it make you feel confident and unique? These are all questions to ponder.
3. Cost/Wear
If it's passed the first two tests, you have to start thinking of the long term wear of the piece. When the novelty wears off, will it stand the test of time in terms of quality and style? If something is versatile while still making a statement, chances are you'll love and wear it for seasons to come. If you can't picture next autumn's you wearing it, I'd put it back.
It's quite simple once you break it down. Luxury shopping is thrilling, but it's important to be smart and take your time or risk regretting what you spend your money on.
