The Art of Putting Together a First Impression Outfit

In a recent interview with Vogue, super model Heidi Klum made a statement about day to day style that really resonated with me. Each morning she wakes up and asks herself, “which person do I want to be today?” This is a question that clothing and beauty have the power to answer. It’s an incredibly impactful concept, and one of the reasons why I love fashion and beauty as much as I do. September seems to bring upon resolutions and self refurbishment just as a new year would, whether you're going back to school or not. As I head into a new school year, I have to ask myself who I want to be, and that starts with the exciting but historically tricky first day look. It’s a science I have yet to master, but here are some of the things I consider when putting together that oh so important first impression outfit.

There's something extremely exciting about waking up in the morning because you never know what you're going to crave. One day it'll be jeans and a white tee-shirt, the next a shirt dress and sneakers and the day after that a statement coat over your favorite vintage finds. This all becomes a bit more complex when it comes to something like the first day back to school, or the first day at a new job. In these cases I'm definitely more inclined to plan ahead.

On these nerve-racking, albeit sometimes overly hyped days (which we will ignore for the purpose of this post because though the end result of a first day can sometimes be lackluster, that doesn't downplay the importance of feeling as confident as possible on that day) we want to feel bold, comfortable and self-assured. To achieve this, stay away from new shoes you have yet to break in, grey tops (deodorant seems to magically not work on these particular days), uncomfortably tight jeans/skirts/trousers and finally, pieces that you may love but at this specific time don't make you feel like yourself.

If your every day uniform is jeans, a graphic tee and some sneakers try out a bolder sneaker, or throw on an oversized pinstripe blazer to ramp up the street style appeal. More of a girly girl? Don't feel like you can't pull out your favorite dress even if you've worn it a hundred times before. This time pair it with a statement piece of jewelry or a bold lipstick colour and you'll feel completely new. Take the look you see here for example. As a minimalist and lover of tailoring, I went for a classic pair of wide leg trousers because they make me feel confident and put together. Instead of black or navy trousers however, these have a bit of a twist with the tropical patter and athletic looking stripe down the side that eases perfectly into the stripe on the side of this chic top.

The point of the first impression outfit isn't to completely reinvent your persona or your style, but to prove to the world and more importantly, yourself, that you've grown and matured since your last "first day". The summer didn't just give you a sun kissed glow, but a optimistically positive aura and a new shade of confidence to add to the amazing person you already were.

For those of you with an upcoming first day, I wish you luck. Though, I don't think you'll need it. If we all go in there with a positive outlook backed up by a killer outfit, we have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for reading.
